Priscilla's World | A Thrilling Opera
A Thrilling Opera

Love, anger, revenge and forgiveness all swirled across the screen during the Metropolitan Opera’s HD broadcast of Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda this afternoon. My sister, Pam, Kaze and I listened/watched entranced for three hours as Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots enacted their historical rivalry. To quote the New York Times: “The production stars the great American mezzo-sopranoJoyce DiDonato in the title role, a part that has been sung by sopranos and mezzo-sopranos. Ms. DiDonato’s performance will be pointed to as a model of singing in which all components of the art form — technique, sound, color, nuance, diction — come together in service to expression and eloquence.” Added to the magic of the afternoon…one of Joyce DiDonato’s brothers sat in front of us. A treat to chat with him during the intermission. We feel we know her (which we don’t) because she is from our town, Prairie Village, KS.
